When Money Sounds Complicated, Ask Who Benefits

"Your payment is only…"

"Your returns could be…"

"You can access the money later…"

Each statement may be true, but each leaves out a question. How much will you pay in total? What happens if the projected return does not occur? What does it cost to access your money?

Financial confusion does not always come from a complicated product. Sometimes it comes from an explanation that highlights the attractive part and leaves the tradeoffs until later.

A clear explanation includes the full picture

Suppose someone offers you a plan to lower a monthly payment. That may free up money today. But if the plan extends the repayment period, it could increase the total interest you pay.

Or suppose a financial illustration shows how money could grow. Before relying on that figure, you need to know which values are guaranteed, which depend on assumptions, and what fees apply. Ongoing fees can reduce the value of an investment over time.

Neither example automatically makes the choice a bad one. It means you need the complete numbers before you decide.

Watch for the missing half of the sentence

When you hear a financial claim, finish it with a question:

If you hear…Ask…
"It's only $___ per month.""What will I pay in total?"
"You could earn ___%""Is that guaranteed, and what happens if the result is lower?"
"You can borrow from the policy.""What interest will I owe, and how will a loan affect the policy?"
"This will save you money.""Compared with what, and over what period?"
"You need to act now.""What changes if I take time to review it?"

These questions are reasonable. You are making a decision with your money and your family's future in mind.
